Monsoon is finally here and the unpredictable weather has now made food places and eateries, a perfect place to stop by.

GADH KALEWA

This one place where I went today, made me feel like I was at some village fair. The walls of this unique eatery are decorated with bamboo artifacts and other local items like "Soopa" and "Chatai" are hunged over it. The ambience truly captures the Chhattisgarhi culture. But brace yourself people because there's more to it. You are going to go on a sweet, spicy and tangy ride.

Chutney, faraa and moong badi

The taste that we all are very familiar with since our childhood: Pataar aur Aama ke Chutney Chila sang! Yes, I am talking about the Chattisgarhi cuisine here. Gadh Kalewa, which is located near Ghadi Chowk, serves different types of breakfast meals but it is not just limited for morning schedule! As you enter the place, you would see glass jars full of different types of sweets and snacks, arranged in a row, so that you could choose by pointing out what you want to have and one of the attendants will serve it you. Walking straight ahead, you would be able to smell Moong Daal ke badi being deep fried and chila being pan fried. The smell of the food mixes up with the smell of wet soil. There's a huge banyan tree in the centre that has a tree house with wooden stairs! What else is left to complete our childhood?! They make you feel like you are back to your home, your village, with small huts. They call it Sangwari Gharaunda Thiha Mahaprasad Mitaan… The platter that I ordered was Fried Fara, Chila, Moong Daal Badi, Mukhiya with Pataar (Tomato) and Mirchi Chutney. On the sweet side, there was Kurmi and Arsa. Of all these, my favourites were Chila: Crisp fried crepe with hint of green chillies, made of rice flour batter and Fara: a hand rolled bite made of boiled rice, sauted with spices like red chillies and sesame. The bigger version of it is called "Mukhiya"

Kurmi

Gud Arsa

Moving on to the sweet side, Kurmi: a type of fried cookie and Arsa: deep fried bread made up of rice and Jaggery. The food here makes you nostalgic. My aunt used to make these during festivals. The crispness of Kurmi and the sweetness of jaggery which melts in your mouth after having Arsa is divine and it is perfect for your sweet tooth. Gadh Kalewa is one amazing place that serves you home style Chattisgarhi cuisine. This place is surrounded by trees and plants which gives you another kind of peace, amidst the city. A satisfying soul food and kalewa(breakfast) for everyone.
